Theatres - Garrick Theatre

Currently Showing (return to list of shows)

Pygmalion ( Garrick Theatre ) - Play
Egocentric Professor of Phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet with his friend, the amiable Colonel Pickering, that he can transform the manners and speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a lady in society. Bernard Shaw's ever-entertaining dramatic tour de force is a provocative assault on the sexual politics, educational limitations and class structure of his day. But peppered with his trademark wit and classic style, it is also beguilingly funny. Starring Rupert Everett and Kara Tointon (Eastenders fame) Suitable for ages 12+

Potted Potter ( Garrick Theatre ) - Play
All seven Harry Potter books in seventy minutes. Watch CBBC's Dan and Jeff take on the ultimate challenge, with the help of endless costumes, brilliant songs, ridiculous props, and a generous helping of Hogwarts magic. This fantastically funny show features all your favourite characters, a special appearance from a very frightening fire-breathing dragon, and even a game of Quidditch involving the audience! This brilliant show was first seen in 2006, and returns for a fifth anniversary tour this summer, including this strictly limited West End season. A must-see for Potter addicts, and a great introduction to the series for anyone who's ever wondered what all the fuss is about. Dan and Jeff are best known for their TV appearances on CBBC and Blue Peter. They were nominated earlier this year for the prestigious Best Entertainment Olivier Award for their last show, Potted Panto.Recommended for ages 6+

The Garrick Theatre

Charing Cross Road
London WC2H 0HH

This theatre was designed by Walter Emden, with CJ Phipps brought in as a consultant to help with the planning on this difficult site, which included an underground river. Originally the theatre had 800 seats on 4 levels, but the gallery (top) level has since been closed and the seating capacity reduced to 656. The gold leaf auditorium was restored in 1986 by the stage designer Carl Toms and in 1997 the front facade had a facelift.

The theatre has mostly been associated with comedies and comedy-dramas. Recent productions include a transfer in January 1982 from the Strand Theatre of the farce Ne Sex Please We're British which then subsquently transferred to the Duchess Theatre in August 1986. On 24 October 1995 the Royal National Theatre's multi-award winning production of JB Priestly's An Inspector Calls opened here having played successful seasons at the RNT's Lyttelton and Olivier theatres aswell as the Aldwych theatre and a season on Broadway.
